the first date

Chiba/Yuki short story

As you'd expect from the title, this is a story about Yuki going on his very first official date with Chiba. AND IT IS SO CUTE OMG

the first date

Suddenly, my cellphone rang, startling me a little.

It was from Chiba-san. What could it be? It was almost lights-out time, and hadn't we said our goodbyes in the hallway just before?

"Asahina."

I picked up the cellphone and Chiba-san called my name. But that was all, he didn't continue.

"Chiba-san? What's the matter?"

He couldn't have hung up. I could hear Chiba-san's breathing faintly. What was the matter? Could it be something kind of hard to say? Come to think of it, his voice just now did sound a bit worried.

"Are you okay? If there's something wrong, I'm coming to your room right away."

"You don't have to come!"

"...Oh, okay."

I was surprised... He yelled so suddenly. But, what was it? Shouting like that made me worry even more.

Chiba-san, I called his name again. And on the other end of the line, I heard the sound of him taking a deep breath.

"Oh, Asahina. I have something to tell you...!"

"Yes!" At that loud, forceful voice, I unconsciously sat up straight.

"Tomorrow, let's go on a date."

"Yes!" I replied reflexively.

...But, a date?

Um, tomorrow, tomorrow. I didn't have any plans. The student council work was fine. I didn't have any arrangements with anyone. Even if I did have some business, it could all be cancelled.

"I see," he said in a very relieved voice from the other side of the line.

"Then, tomorrow morning. I'll come pick you up from your room."

"Right..."

Before I even had the chance to say thank you, Chiba-san hung up.

A date...

I unconsciously gulped. The moment I hung up, a sudden wave of nervousness came over me.

Well, tomorrow was Sunday, so it was perfect for a date, wasn't it? The weather forecast was clear and the season was nice. I was sure it would be the perfect date weather. But saying it all of sudden was flustering, wasn't it?

It would be our first.

What would I do? For a date, where do you go, normally? What should I do?

Since Chiba-san hadn't mentioned anything other than a date, I probably didn't need anything special. Just going out normally, spending time normally... but since it was a date, there'd be a little more of that stuff... maybe. That stuff, like this and that lover-y stuff.

Oh no. I didn't want to ruin it.

I couldn't stay still, and with cellphone in hand, I paced around the room. What should I wear? Money... how much did I need? How much of my allowance was left again?

That's it! The cellphone! I could look it up! I'd completely forgotten!!

A date. Um... uwah. Here they came, here they came. "Date spots," "date clothes." Among the list of related phrases were the words "date hotel booking."

Hotel booking, what does that mean!?

Booking for what exactly!!??

No good. Calm down. Calm down... I had to think about it in order. What I'd bring. The clothes I'd wear. Money. Um, after that... calm down. Calm down...

Tomorrow, I was going on my first date with Chiba-san. I would make it an awesome date...!

~~~
...But contrary to my enthusiasm, the morning came without me doing anything.
On top of worrying about it so much, I wore the clothes I was used to. Somehow, it didn't seem any different than usual, but oh well. I had plenty of money, so that wouldn't be a problem, and I wantonly put it all my wallet. Anyway, it wasn't like I had a ton.
I'd thought a lot about places to go, but I decided to leave it to Chiba-san. No matter where we went, I was sure I'd have fun, since it was a date with Chiba-san. Besides, I wanted to know if there was a place Chiba-san wanted to go.
Suddenly, the alarm at my bedside rang out and I flusteredly stopped it.
It was already seven. Going to sleep now was completely out of the question. Since Chiba-san was coming to pick me up, it would be bad if I fell asleep unawares. Besides, I wasn't sleepy at all.
There was a timid knock at the door. "Oh... Asahina."
I immediately jumped up at the very hesitant voice that came through the door. "Good morning, Chiba-san!"
"Were you awake? I thought I might be too early..."
Oh. Chiba-san looked so cool. Even though it was only a simple t-shirt and jeans, he seemed kind of cool. After all, a t-shirt suited people with muscles. Huh? But, his taste in clothes, well, Joker-san and Sonoda-san had said it before...
"What's the matter?"
"N, nothing! Um, it's just that I didn't think you'd come here so early!"
"And I even waited..."
"Huh?"
"...It's nothing. I'm glad you were up."
I gave a vague nod, not saying that it was because I couldn't sleep. At that moment, my stomach growled.
"Do you want to eat at the dorm cafeteria first?"
"Yeah."
~~~

We ate in the dorm cafeteria and sat at the table closest to the door by the windows.

It was the usual curry flavor in the usual place. But it was kind of different. When I thought about how I was about to go on a date with the person eating breakfast with me at the same table, I got oddly nervous. Because of that, we didn't chat much more than usual.

Still, I was happy and ended up grinning. Maybe it was the same for Chiba-san too, since whenever our eyes met, we would start smiling without knowing who started it. Besides, we felt like we were going to start laughing weirdly and hurriedly gulped everything down together.

Smiling, we finished our food and left the dorm.

On the way to the bus stop, suddenly Chiba-san asked, "Where do you want to go?"

Huh? Chiba-san didn't have a plan either?

"Um... what should we do..." I was at a loss. Having it suddenly turned to me put me at a loss.

"Wherever you want to go is fine."

"I'm also fine going wherever you want to go, Chiba-san."

As we both walked side by side, we weren't really settling on where to go. We arrived at the stop still like that. There weren't even ten minutes until the next bus. We had to hurry and decide.

I was panicking and Chiba-san murmured to me, "...How about a movie?"

A movie, huh? Well, that was pretty date-like!

Chiba-san and I had the bus all to ourselves. The two of us sat side by side in the wide seat at the back.

"Chiba-san, what kind of movies do you watch?" I asked excitedly.

And Chiba-san answered with a thoughtful look, "...I don't really watch movies. What about you?"

I went silent at being asked. Come to think of it... "I don't really either..."

That's right. I hadn't gone much to movie theaters. I just watched what was on TV.

"Is there a movie you want to see?"

"Not especially..."

"I see..."

"......."

"Let's decide at the movie theater?"

"Yeah, let's do that."

I nodded and Chiba-san smiled shyly a little.

I wondered what kind of movie Chiba-san would choose? After all, something with fighting? Or maybe a period drama. But, I was sure any movie would be fine. I'd probably enjoy any movie.

The bus swayed heavily every once in a while, and every time, our elbows and shoulders bumped. Even though that's all it was, every time we bumped, my heart skipped a beat. But I decided to try it on purpose, under the guise of a coincidence.

Bump. Bump.

Chiba-san didn't say anything. But he didn't seem to dislike it. Bump. Getting carried away, I did it one more time.

And, bump. That time, Chiba-san bumped back. In time to the swaying of the bus, we bumped each other slightly over and over. My lips were slightly open and I felt like I was going to burst out laughing with fun and happiness.

The bus stopped at a red light. And with that, the bus heaved and the backs of our hands brushed lightly. At the warm sensation of bare skin, I felt ready to give up the ghost.

I unconsciously looked at Chiba-san, and he was looking right back at me. Our gazes met perfectly and I looked away, flustered.

Then, my hand was enveloped by warmth. Chiba-san's hand was gently grasping just my fingertips. His hand was full of calluses from the hard bamboo sword, on the pads of his fingers and the palm of his hand, but it was gentle, as if protecting my fingers.

This was exciting. I was getting really excited. My hand was hot as he clasped it.

Oh no! The date, oh no!!

We had finally just left the school, hadn't we? We hadn't even gotten to town or to the movie theater, had we? But still, would I be okay with my heart pounding like this from now on? It would be like that all day, wouldn't it?

The bus slowly took off.

And so our seemingly long, seemingly short, happy and fun Sunday started. Thus, the curtain opened on our first date.
